(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") 19th-century Shirvan rugs are renowned for their fine, tight weaving, compact geometric motifs, and symbolic designs rooted in local folklore. In this tour de force piece, powerful Harshang medallions, rendered in a zoomorphic style, dominate the field. At the heart of each is a series of the beloved Star of Wisdom motif, along with birds and dragons. Secondary iconic split-palmettes, flaming Botehs, and stylized chrysanthemum rosettes support the central devices. The remaining open spaces are densely filled with a universe of diminutive ancient tribal motifs, including cloudbands, dragons, rosettes, Diamonds of Strength, and sheep. The fantastical range of scales throughout the composition invites a three-dimensional perception of depth. The double-headed sheep symbolizes the herd of these animals, so essential to the tribespeople. The famous Kufic main border makes an exciting contrast to the more fluid field. Tribal weavers reveled in brilliant colors and dynamic juxtapositions. The very tempting, fully saturated hues project from the ivory ground and include vibrant vermilion, rich royal blue, aqua, flax, and jade green with scintillating highlights of cerulean blue.
