KEYHOLE KAZAK, Southern Central Caucasian
4' 1" x 5' 8"
Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) (Featured in catalog Vol. 28, No. 1, p.27) A collectible example of the vital weaving tradition that thrived high in the Caucasus Mountains throughout the 1800s, this small Kazak rug in excellent condition reflects an amazing harmony among many elements. The central Keyhole motif of twin enclosed hexagonal medallions, symmetrical at first glance, actually hosts numerous charming irregularities that is beloved by Caucasian rug collectors. Note the intentional omission of triangular corner pieces in the uppermost section! This dynamic balance continues in the breathtaking border suite: clearly rendered, well-spaced elemental patterns achieve brilliant cohesion, while supporting countless slight variations in virtually every motif.
