("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") On the short-list of the most extraordinary pieces from this exalted Caucasian subgroup we have ever encountered, this nearly 200-year-old Lesghi is a masterpiece in every respect. Its startling virtuosity exemplifies the consummate color-combining and dyeing expertise that is rarely found outside of the very best rugs from the first half of the 19th century. Creating a one-in-the-world artistic vision, archetypal, tribal imagery traditional to this style, expressed in multi-layered scales, captures the sense of a vibrant life-force energy familiar to the tribal sensitivity. Perfectly proportioned signature Lesghi star motifs are rendered with exceptional clarity. Though dexterous drawing is fully evident, the weaver has used juxtapositions of color to define space even more effectively, coalescing each design in the viewer’s eye, similar to 19th century Pointillist painting. An effusive, profoundly joyful assortment of individually formed tribal totems populates every part of the field with intensely personal spontaneous designs.
