(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") This 170-year-old tribal rug hails from a centuries-old Caucasian village that created a powerful, cosmologically evocative rug design based on dragon mythology. In this tradition, dragons were harbingers of celestial beneficence and protection hidden in the clouds, and their depiction was a meditation on this mystery. This high mountain aesthetic used pairs of cloud bands to provide dynamic imagery, grouping them within hexagons that were placed on an axis. Expressing an infectious spirit, the three-and-a-half grand medallions in this piece were woven with a pleasingly casual spontaneity. The cloud bands themselves have great individuality yet are not unruly. A splendiferous pomegranate-toned field is populated with an entertaining menagerie, including four glorious peacocks with their retinue of acolytes, as well as a striking display of tribal symbols. With ever-changing chromatic combinations, the “Wheel of Life” motif repeated around the border adds significant overall richness to the rug. As wall art or nestled in a quiet spot on the floor, the rich patina and joie de vivre of this noble, early rendition will perennially satisfy.
