(“New Acquisition Sampling") This one of the most delightfully idiosyncratic triple medallion Kazaks we have ever seen, a fantastic example of this tradition’s unfettered spontaneity. As the rug was woven from the bottom up, the largest medallion was the first to be created and could very possibly have been an initial exploration of how to draw an octagon 3 feet wide. By the top of the field, much had been learned. Meanwhile, the secondary motifs—numerous animals, wheels of life, and human figures—are all well expressed as is the chalice and oak leaf border. So was the first medallion a child’s first attempt or an adult's comedic device? In the Kazak tradition, capturing the moment was highly valued and this 170-year-old piece is an eloquent testament to a remarkable folk art tradition.
