(Connoisseur-Caliber)
The lowland mountainous area of Gendje is situated along the main road that runs from the Black Sea in the west to the Caspian in the east. It acted as a market center for the region and, as such, must have adopted this “blossom” design from nearby Shirvan for this highly unusual piece. In the field, elemental flower heads occupy the compartments created by serrated latticework ornamented by tiny almond florets. The sophisticated simplicity of its palette is surprisingly successful. It allows the distinctive abrash hue shifts, especially in the rare shade of blue, to come to the fore. As a background color to the primary border, the tiny spontaneously placed, whimsical motifs stand out and sparkle. Cruciform crystalline blossoms, with their slight variations of shape and position, make them appear to be floating along a lazy river in slow motion. As a quieter rug, it would undoubtedly harmonize with almost any space or decorative style, and its condition allows for many years as one-of-a-kind art for the floor.
