Among the compartmentalized depictions of hanging lanterns, life-like acanthus leaves, candelabras, laurel branches, and pomegranate clusters are two incandescent willows glowing in jade green as though alighted by St. Elmo’s fire. Coptic crosses are hidden in plain sight. The remaining panels are filled with fanciful Persian tile designs fit for a rug of great distinction. The exceptional main border bears tree encircled flower fields and heraldic-like shield form palmettes alternating in direction, with luminous, stylized vinery interwoven between each. This versatile 5x7 rug boasts a joyous, wide palette of naturally dyed rich hues and is in heavier pile condition at a full century of age.
