This extremely early Gubpa Shirvan vividly presents the most prized qualities of this highly coveted sub-style, rarely found in weavings from the latter part of the 19th century. Floating on a gently rippled sapphire field a magically iridescent triad of hexagonal medallions contain symbolic landscapes of mountains, trees and celestial elements. Potent fire brick red, serrated flabella-esque pendants complete the grand central axis emphasized by the orderly placement of ivory snowflake motifs and endless knot rosettes at the top. A captivating golden main border is filled with a sparkling, jubilantly hued interlock pattern of jade, vivid azure, glowing vermillion and sparingly employed rare Tyrian purple. Producing an unfathomable aura, its significant age of 170 years, extraordinary fine knotting and excellent wool combine to create a patina that dramatically enhances the exquisitely balanced, crisply drawn design.
