(High-Collectible)
("Best-of-its-Type Sold in 2020”) At approaching two centuries of age, this notably early Serapi reveals the enigmatic, archetypal imagery that is of interest to antique village carpet connoisseurs seeking pieces of provenance whenever they occasionally arise. Woven 80 years before the first forays of commercialism began to take root in this area, it is an extremely rare example, superbly evocative and seemingly inspired by artistic influences that have left no trace. Other than the large palmettes in the corner pieces and the signature Serapi color palette, this small rug expresses little of the later room size pieces that would become so popular. Taken on its own merits, however, this powerfully provocative piece is exotic and unknowable. Particularly, the borders are undecipherable, obviously presenting a code whose translation has been lost in time. Very old pieces for which there are not answers hold great allure for some collectors.
