Kirshehir is an ancient weaving center in Central Turkey, hosting many nomadic peoples, and this enigmatic early carpet reflects the sensitive assimilation of four nomadic traditions. The series of narrow outer borders and the niche construct derive from the local style, as does the serrated minimalist flowers. The alternating coloration of these blossoms, however, is a Turcoman technique. The sprinkling of the “Z” motif in the field and the “dice” device in the blue border harken from the Caucasus while diagonal diamonds appearing in the outmost border are seldom seen outside the Kurdish lexicon. Various cultures are cohabitating in this unprecedented, beguiling masterful design, becoming especially alluring because of the depth of patina emanating from its pile. Learn About This Rug Type
