TURKOMAN YOMUT, Central Asia
6' 2" x 9' 4"
188 x 284cm
Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) From the enormous Turkoman tribe of Central Asia, with its long history of powerful rulers and far-reaching alliances since the Middle Ages, no less than 13 sub-tribes developed finely knotted carpets with specific guls, large octagonal designs, as their tribal crests. This 145 year old Yomut main carpet presents their Gabsa or Kepse gul, a flattened, horizontal shape with elongated “wings”, that when repeated, creates a complex interlocking design. At the heart of each gul are highly abstracted Celestial Dragon motifs acquired through centuries of Silk Road contacts with China. An expertly striated brick red field is the backdrop for its patterning enhanced by bright gold, lapis lazuli, and indigo. The borders feature the stepped “ashik” symbol, found nearby on pottery from 3,000 B.C. With “skirts” at top and bottom and astonishingly soft wool, this piece is in very good condition.
