(High-Collectible)
("New Arrivals Gallery") Ever the masters of variety while successfully maintaining a distinctive look, rugs woven by the Bakhtiari people run the gamut of stylistic interpretations. These range from the most tribal geometric abstractions to extremely fine pictorial works such as this that are more in line with rugs from the great Persian cities. The exceptional fineness of its weave was nicknamed by connoisseurs “Bibibaf” or “Grandmother’s Weave,” harkening to a bygone era of consummate quality that was seldom seen at this time. This magnificent rug emanates a delicate sheen from a gently earned patina that further highlights the clarity of the dynamic design. A fantastical tree in full bloom emerges from a sparkling landscape spreading across a golden reserve while sheltering pairs of individualistically rendered birds in its welcoming boughs. Underneath, two families of breeding pairs shelter with their happy broods. Every glowing color within this arboreal wonderland appears to have been created with pigments derived from crushed gemstones. In this case, it was unnecessary, however, as the now lost dye recipes used a variety of natural plant sources. The chromatic splendor is carried right to the edge through a border rife with realistic perching birds amidst a grapevine also bursting with blooms and bowls of fruit representing plenty.
