Twitter Instagram Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) ("Best-of-its-Type Sold in 2020”) Likely depicting stylized carnations, this quite early, enchanting example is an exciting piece from the second quarter of the 19th century, especially significant for its rare saffron yellow field color. This quite small rare rug offers a glimpse into the expressiveness allowed and explored by weavers during this early era. By comparison with later examples, its much more variegated drawing of the field elements and exquisite yet enigmatic depiction of the eagle’s head border design ably explores the level of precision and exactitude its weaver worked with. Never seen in later pieces, there is a strong improvisational quality here, with secondary elements that skillfully interrupt the order of the repeated striped “flower” motif without unbalancing it. This carnation blossom design clearly predates a later alteration into the cabbage rose or “Guli Farang” pattern that became a popular motif later in the 19th century. Learn About This Rug Type
