The glowing 200 year old palette emphasizes its powerful homage to the dragon energy that since Mesopotamian times has captured the tribal imagination. The dragon itself is not seen but its presence is suggested in this room size rug, largely through two devices. The oversized designs that create a central axis in the rug are given scale-like serrated edges, a clear reference to the mythological animal, and a motif consisting of connected spirals, appear throughout this early piece. The spirals conjure a twisting movement associated with this unseen, benevolent power. These curly motifs appear along the sides of the field in zig zagging lozenges. Learn About This Rug Type
