("New Arrivals Gallery") From the ingenious Persian Afshar tribe, this piece is at once tightly controlled and exuberantly expressive. The compositional balance and unusually dynamic assortment of motifs and emphatic natural hues bring about a brilliantly orchestrated tension that is seldom seen. Shamanic mask-like shapes alternate in singles and pairs with elemental chevron-branched Trees of Life. Its beautiful gem color tones are particularly vivid through the natural aventurescence of superb lanolin-rich wool, where lapis, emerald, carnelian, and mahogany obsidian are deftly illumined by highlights of bright ivory. In a daring and unexpected move, the artist-weaver introduced an aqueous admixture of amethyst-hued Tyrian purple, an extremely luxurious dye for a peripatetic tribal people. Despite the long odds of survival among the nomadic tribes, this authentic piece has medium pile with a reduced outer guard stripe.
