(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Among nomadic Afshar rugs woven in the mid-19th century, this striking star exhibits an infinitely appealing folk art vitality with the stamp of an accomplished artist entirely at ease with creative innovation - at once tightly controlled and expressive spontaneity. A phalanx of dreamily aqueous shapes expands across the field, separated by classically elemental, chevron-branched ’Trees of Life.’ Each contains a diverse cosmos of ornaments in varied sizes, shapes, color combinations, and outlining, making each motif come alive before the viewer’s eyes. This rug's palette runs from warm to cool tones, juxtaposing shimmering carnelian, burnished gold, and hints of mulberry with navy, ice blue, and clouded jade for a full chorus of animated colors. Vivid borders of chained flowering sprigs and vine meanders create a powerful graphic counterpoint to the field. This dynamic art-level Persian rug deserves its place as a precious collectible keepsake to be displayed on a wall or table or imbue a small floor space with a palpable ancient authenticity. Its originally closely cropped pile has retained superb, even medium height after 175 years of careful ownership.
