Rugs that were woven by the nomadic tribes in the first half of the 19th century rarely survive, as they were created not only as artworks, but simultaneously as utilitarian items for family use. This background underlies the significance of this complete, medium pile, splendid member of Afshar tribal weaving. Highly collectible, it is an astoundingly small carpet, presenting a delightful rendition of early Afshar field treatment of spontaneously scattered, differently sized symbols. This cascade of tremendously asymmetrical, playfully spontaneous forms is a clear demonstration of its early provenance. As the19th century evolved and society industrialized, rugs from this tribe greatly decreased in number, and what was woven displayed far less and varied motifs, more regularly arranged. At over 185 years, it exhibits a profound patina only seen in rugs of great age.
