Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Bakhtiari village rugs are renowned for expressing inventive floral arrangements evocative of those of the neighboring city, of Kirman, yet in a novel, stylistic manner, and using the unabashed, fully saturated color palette favored by the weavers' tribal ancestors. This remarkable, unusually wide area-size rug bursts forth with an entirely dazzling jewel-toned color palette emerging from the deepest midnight indigo ground in a brilliant display of chiaroscuro. A single great vase in brilliant scarlet red rests atop a mound of flowers at the base of the rug, and from it spare branches radiate upwards, supporting an exuberant abundance of hanging floral sprays which populate the entire field. The stained-glass-like color palette includes a highly prized, thoroughly luminous shade of cerulean blue, which is made even more eye-catching by a most subtle abrash. Other hues in this invigorating palette include carnelian red, coral salmon, cobalt blue, a verdant green, and varying shades of sienna. In a display of bravado, two entirely unexpected cartouches appear in the upper half of the field on a brilliant, burnished-gold background. Each cartouche contains a suspended orb-shaped vase so abstract that it may be interpreted by the enchanted viewer as a miniature landscape painting. This rug's heavy pile condition and extremely silky wool further accentuate its utterly resplendent color palette, making this a much-prized piece for any connoisseur.
