(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Thrilling novice and seasoned rug collectors alike, nineteenth century Bakshaish carpets offer seemingly infinite, always unaffected creativity from gorgeous reinterpretations of Safavid works, such as this piece, to never-before-seen visionary, elemental standouts. This incredible piece harkens to the late sixteenth century overall palmette patterning while dexterously capturing the joyful simplicity, spontaneity, and naive charm that are the beloved essential attributes at the heart of this tradition. The euphoric pattern language is very far from repetitive. With expressively folkloric drawings arranged in relaxed symmetry, each luxe palmette, lotus blossom, and mask-like form is individually created with great fluidity. Every motif has an illuminated presence through a background of scintillating royal azure, often called ‘Bakshaish Blue.’ Its dye formula must have been a closely held secret, now lost to time. Drifting on an ultra-wide, golden camel background are additional giant cloud-inspired flowerheads, accompanied by esoteric figural forms unlike we have ever seen in over four decades of handling Bakshaish weavings. Each possesses a visage that seems joyful and welcoming.
