Zul-i-Sultan is a repeating nightingale and vase motif that is among the most cherished of classical Persian designs. Rarely is it recreated with such dignity, grace and dexterity as in this remarkable, 170-year-old palace-size carpet. Each bird form is drawn slightly differently, with tremendous refinement, constantly revitalizing the expansive allover pattern. A piece of this scope is at the epitome of mid-19th-century woven art on a grand scale. It is preserved in surprisingly good condition with appealing patinated wool and a gamut of vibrant naturally dyed colors, including cranberry and claret red, rich coral, golden sand, honey and slate blue.
