The Hadji Jallili workshop used a very dramatic inky blue background that accentuated the subtlety of the highly faceted botanical world it captured. Exemplifying the elite, deeply refined rugs from this acclaimed Court style, this garden portrays a wondrous profusion of painstakingly articulated flowers, branches, and leaves proceeding from a central pedestal vase and two attendant smaller vases. Each is subtly shaded in soft, complementary hues, though restricted in breadth, to achieve atmospheric understatement. The palette nonetheless includes a dazzling variety of closely related, nuanced shades, and in accordance with Persian aesthetics, it uses touches of copper red and, of course, the midnight background to preserve the carpet’s overarching harmony.
