(Connoisseur-Caliber)
Illustrating the innovative spirit that the finest antique village carpets express, this fantastic Malayer demonstrates artistic ingenuity and a brilliant sense of color-combining. A multi-lobed, frond fringed medallion occupies the center amidst a bed of radiant flora. Quartered versions are present as the spandrels hinting at the infinite expansion of this mesmerizing pattern beyond this small “window,” as is the weavers’ traditional belief. Adding to its accomplishments is the innovative frame, which rejects the more traditional Malayer use of a series of narrow borders. Rather it employs one broad band surrounding the field, highlighted by a brilliant, beautifully abashed sapphire blue ground supporting a lively course of peony blossoms that suddenly stretches into a more simplified rendering in the top quarter of the rug. Its seasoned weaver employed an utterly harmonious color palette of deep indigo, bright vermilion, golden wheat, carnelian red, sage green, and soft rose to achieve an alchemy of illumined tones. This uniquely charming piece retains a heavier shimmering pile, resulting from its high-luster mountain wool and unusually fine weave.
