("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The urban center of Kashan has a storied past in the development of fine Persian weavings, some designs dating back to the early 16th century Safavid era. During the 19th century, unforgettable masterworks were designed and created in the workshop of master weaver Hadji Hassan Mohtasham. This exquisite piece’s artistry relies on extraordinary fine weaving and subtle, skillfully dyed color tones. The inner diamond centerpiece encloses a sapphire-toned broad flowerhead enclosed by smaller blossoms, all resting upon a deep indigo reserve filled with finely rendered flora. This central focus is ensconced by a series of distinctively narrow bands (sometimes referred to as the “cane” design) in tones of sapphire, sandstone, soft persimmon, and apricot. The four corner spandrels deftly mirror the central motif. The deep indigo main border is adorned with a series of delicate florets interspersed with a minute millefleur design.
