(High-Collectible) The inspired virtuoso composition of this otherworldly Mohtasham Kashan carpet is simply unprecedented, and when it was unfurled after arriving in one of the Great Lake Collection shipments, not only a few jaws hit the floor. While it is technically an “allover” pattern, it consists of a multiplicity of kaleidoscopic mini-medallions that are wonderful microcosmic worlds in themselves, entwined together as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of nature. The carefully selected lamb’s wool chosen by the weavers for this special, likely commissioned project glistens with the natural luminosity inherent from its high lanolin content, amplifying the staggering effect of the sublime and exotic color palette. Masterful abrash color variations elucidate a depth and visual quality that was only achieved through tremendous attention to detail aided by the clever artistic spontaneity that arises during the creative process. The lush border is a singular feat not to be repeated in the same way again in other carpets, with a highly successful freeform contrast to the sense of order in the field. Not only is this masterpiece from the City tradition one of the most resplendent and individual Mohtashams we have ever seen but, unfathomably, it remains in heavier pile condition.
