("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The 19th-century Qashqai weavings from the Shishboluki subtribe are renowned for their extraordinary craftsmanship akin to Persian city rugs and their profound level of refinement and compositional harmony. Distilled into a phrasing that is richly elegant, this rug’s classic hexagonal field supports an amazing allover tapestry of exceptional fineness, with each radiant rosette or totemic motif reading like the weaver’s pictorial daily diary. The field displays a central row of seven hooked medallions, each medallion enclosing the “never-ending knot”, eight-pointed “Stars of Wisdom”, and delightfully rendered birds on an alabaster base. The entirety of the deep indigo field and enclosing alabaster surround are filled with a mesmerizing plethora of birds, animals, “Stars of Wisdom”, weaver’s combs, and other numerous geometric flora and totemic designs. The ability to conceive and produce this dynamic design rests in a profound weaving skill beyond measure. This rug was most likely specifically made for a tribal leader or to commemorate an important event.
