(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Sultanabads are much prized for transforming the highly formal classical Persian patterns into utterly charming folk art, in which subtle irregularity and shifting proportions are primary, offering a pleasing sense of movement in the design and conveying a very human quality to the drawing. Here, the petite, deep royal blue field, a "Garden of Paradise" adorned with willows, cypress, and several other flowering plants, is framed by a massive border that is dramatic in both its size and the subtlety of its color combinations. The minor borders particularly offer a most intriguing and understated palette, which, combined with the rich, warm terra cotta red main border, brings a compelling sense of calm when viewing the piece as a whole. Superb heavy pile condition, its sophisticated art statement, and its quite unusual size and almost square proportions make it a very practical art masterpiece to enliven any room.
