Palace-sized 19th-century Sultanabad carpets are exceptionally rare, as each one required teams of six to ten skilled weavers working on high scaffolding for several years. Most of these highly prized carpets were woven by the Ziegler & Co. firm during the Persian "Revival Period" of the late 1800's, and were designed to furnish the expansive public areas of grand estates and mansions in Europe and America. In this magnificent art carpet, the all-over floral design offers a refined, relaxed aesthetic and a soft palette of ivory, terra cotta, bronze, jade, sky blue, buttercup, and deep indigo that resonate with the Arts and Crafts Movement. The effervescent all-over pattern of floral bouquets is based on the region's local flora, and through a deft arrangement of blossoms, a latticework is merely implied, imparting subtle order in the expansive field of abundant blossoms. Petite corner spandrels, featuring the traditional herati design, artfully frame the opulent field. An intricate, meandering vine supporting Shah Abbas palmettes forms the grand main border, flanked by two pairs of meander borders and an innermost of Mountains of Security. Preserved in very good condition, at over 125 years old, and with its casual elegance, this rare art carpet will add a stately ambiance to a significant room.
