(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) This major piece depicts a one-in-the-world drama-filled scene that captures a freeform quality almost impossible to convey through knotting. Simultaneously, the weaver preserved an exceptionally harmonious balance. In the cinnabar red field, twelve highly stylized, individually rendered dragon forms with looping tails in cerulean and powder blue swoop to the earth below, appearing to swirl their serpentine bodies around behind the abstract garden-scape before emerging again from the edge of the field. Tertiary motifs such as small leaves, blooming elemental ‘Trees of Life,’ and top-knotted boteh are scattered across the composition. Highly precise, narrow borders allow this epic mythological scene to be the star attraction while providing a defined boundary. The central stripe features a cubistic, mobile-esque pattern of buds and blossoms, while the adjacent bands house a much more curvilinear, meandering vine and carnation motif. Curiously at the very top in the spandrel areas are scripts written in Indian numerals (adopted by Arab traders centuries before this rug was created).
