3rd Quarter, 19th Century
(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Among the many surprising finds in this multi-generational cache, the 19th-century Bakshaish carpets consistently thrill novice and seasoned rug collectors alike with their seemingly infinite, unaffected creativity and ever-innovative patterns. Embedded in a matrix of broad golden vinery, its central shield medallion is a sculpted masterpiece bearing pairs of palmettes within a deep indigo centerpiece. The outer section features a free-form scrollwork of celadon vinery on an extraordinarily rarely seen glowing amber ground. In the sunset-red reserve, irrepressible poychrome flowers playfully peek out through the openings left behind. Luminous cerulean corner spandrels feature virtuoso abrash striations like gentle ripples on the surface of the sea. Extremely good even pile condition is an additional dividend, as this visually stunning village carpet is equally utilitarian as it is artistically inspiring.
