("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Through peerless innovation and unfathomable variety of designs, the best antique Persian Bakshaish carpets thrill both novice and seasoned rug collectors with their spirited, always unaffected creativity. This exceedingly rare carpet exudes much of the grace of the classical Persian court carpets that inspired this format while retaining the free-flowing artistry for which this style is known. A carefully sculpted medallion starts with a fortified centerpiece containing an eccentric assemblage of abstract botanical elements. Horizontal flaming torch-like leaves illuminate this indigo outer surround. The mostly unadorned reserve, except for crystalline floating and tethered trees, allows the dramatic power of the medallion to breathe. Cerulean blue spandrels house truss towers populated by wild 'murghi' fowl and accompanied by shattered geometric motifs. Eccentric figures of the weavers wave their arms, smoke hookah pipes, and pose in the ‘Elibelinde’ or hands-on-hips motif. The imaginative brainstorm continues in the border where the sense of scale is a tool for artistic expression, and numerous ornamental improvisations happily abide. Exploring all of the nuances and clever spontaneity of design is one of the inimitable joys of owning antique Persian carpets. As though spared for its originality, this piece came to us in astonishingly good condition for collection, investment, and use in the home.
