Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Known colloquially in the trade as the “Iron Rugs of Persia” due to their woolen double-weft construction, it was an artistic tradition significantly nurtured by the predominantly Kurdish population living in and around the town of Bijar, where merchants and outside traders would have encountered them. This fantastic piece offers an entertaining pattern of aqueous palmettes and serrated curling leaf clusters that simultaneously create the outline of a series of partial mini-medallions that are positioned slightly “out of frame.” The subtle variations of each motif's size, shape, and outlining offer the viewer a gently animated effect to maintain constant visual interest. A chromatically bold palette is executed with dazzling sensitivity in the juxtaposition of vigorous colors, and is rife with continuous evidence of spontaneity to express the unaffected aesthetic of its creative folk art weavers. In the central midnight cobalt border, the exceptional hues leap out again in a large rosette and incandescent cypress tree design, punctuated by tiny blossoms floating in the interstitial spaces. Its robust condition assures its future as a welcome addition to a space in the home that needs a dose of pizzazz.
