FERAHAN, Northwest Persian
8' 5" x 11' 5" Late 19th Century Price: $37,000
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This eye-catching carpet presents the Ferahan tradition's triumphantly varied use of the allover design in a seldom-seen interlaced translucent mini-medallion presentation. Between each kaleidoscopic locus sparkles a lively, effusive field of budding filigree and crystal-etched cathedral-like stained glass flora. In this brilliant room-size carpet, the sophisticated repeating field design, where cherubic fan palmettes balance upon platforms of branches, is veiled by a dexterously nuanced technique of expansion and compression of negative space. Its glorious colors are carefully rendered for depth and harmony with the entire palette: yellows of lemon, citrine, and mustard; jasper and ochre reds, spruce, and asparagus green; with powder, cerulean, and slate blues commingle, inviting the viewer to become transfixed with admiration and fascination. The main border's startling beauty gracefully frames the brilliant interior faceting of this tour de force carpet in excellent, heavy-pile condition at great age. Erudite Ferahans such as this are also renowned for coalescing exceptionally well with wood furniture and flooring, making them ideal for enhancing libraries and dens.
