(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") This antique weaving is an excellent, absolutely individual specimen of the vaunted "Garden of Paradise" style created by the master carpet designer, Hadji Baba Ganjeh (a type rarer than Hadji Jallili). Its consummate quality can be seen in the extremely fine weave, an entirely re-imagined view underneath the canopy, and pinpoint detail work. Like its winsome, subtlely shifting soft corals, the atmosphere of this carpet is gentle. Even the dragons seem friendly. Don't miss the pair of chubby bees to the left and right of the lantern outside the columns. Hadji Ganjeh was a bit of a maverick, rising to prominence in Laver Kirman, then moving to Tabriz, possibly for a freer artisan milieu. He did not set up a grand workshop but seemingly preferred to work on one project at a time. His floral artistry is distinctive as it relies on the sense of swirling vinery and the sway of leaves to express his vision of beauty more than on the articulation of flowers. The virtuoso coloration of this rug includes uncommonly seen pale hues of mint green (a signature color in the Ganjee palette), peach, and apricot to offset its striking salmon ground. The field displays a pair of classic columns culminating in tranquil corners, with the lower field featuring a taupe vase sprouting a bouquet of ascending flowers.
