Traditional rugs woven in and around the urban center of Heriz and its hinterland are eternally popular, and this is an exuberant vintage example a joyous range of naturally dyed colors. Crisply delineated against a rich carnelian red field the visually striking oversized geometric medallion, with its dramatic palmette pendants, draws the viewer in with its captivating stained-glass-like clarity. Also of note is an unusual-to-see ‘cubist’ take on the vine and blossom motif in the outer guard border. This piece features a celebratory display of color including saffron golds, rose coral, periwinkle, indigo and deep aqua green juxtaposed to each other in a symphonic harmony. Medium pile with some patina allows this over one-century-old rug in the extremely versatile 7x10 size to be comfortable used for another generation or more.
