("New Arrivals Gallery") Karaja was a vibrant weaving Azerbaijan village in the Heriz region since the 17th century. Its weavers created distinctive field designs of which the alternating medallions appearing in this piece are the last to survive. At 140 years of age, this is one of only a handful of 19th century Karajas we have ever had the privilege to present. Its evocative format of very generously spaced, irregular patterns and colors bear no resemblance to the decorative level 20th century Karajas woven for export. Here, the interplay of a copper-toned field and green-blue niched medallions flanking an emblematic hooked hexagon is riveting, its allure augmented by a rare golden wheat toned border and the crisp drawing of its enigmatic symbols. In a larger than usual 5 x 7-1/2 rug size, this prize remains in wonderful condition.
