("Gold Coasts Collection") A momentous find, this extraordinarily animated early example from the Shekarlu sub-tribe of the Qashqai Confederacy offers a pattern language distinctive to this small, and now extinct, weaving group. Recognizable for the signature ivory slanted combs throughout the otherwise constantly changing field pattern, this carpet epitomizes the tribal weaving tradition's incredible outpouring of creativity. Everything seems meant to surprise the viewer, such as the half-drawn medallions at the bottom and top for the field. Chessboard diamonds and latch hooked Wheels of Life are neatly split asunder, prescient of modern art. The spectrum of magnificent dyes for this rustically produced tribal rug is staggering, and the color juxtapositions these tonalities allow are nonstop. In the border, a dazzling assortment of archetypal hooked rosettes are joined by bands of conjoined jewel shapes with intaglio-like S-motifs.
