Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") This intriguing Serapi expresses every attribute of the famed "Dragon and Phoenix" folk art design most cherished by collectors of weavings from the Persian Northwest. The pattern language expresses a liveliness and buoyant benevolence, starting with the central mandala, where coral cloudbands (representing the dragon element) interact with their ivory celestial consorts on a fathoms-deep indigo ground. The weaver's attentive mastery to the hierarchy of scale in the design overall is a pleasure to behold. This harmonious effect, coupled with the individualistic drawings, makes this piece especially compelling, both visually and cosmically. Tremendously luminous hues and their adept juxtaposition amplify the aesthetic achievement, directing light and shade in the most eye-pleasing of ways. An ode to the Serapi tradition can be found in the borders where a 'winged' palmette sequence named after a shah from the illustrious Safavid dynasty is flanked by narrow ivory bands where carnations dance away the day. Its extremely durable, handcrafted qualities have assured its current superb condition.
