(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") Woven in the rugged mountains of Northwest Persia before 1910, Serapi carpets are a distinct Heriz region style, with finer knotting and more large-scale, spaciously placed designs compared to other weavings from this area. These artisans successfully synthesized design elements from both the neighboring Caucasian tribal weaving traditions to the north and the elegant court carpets from the city of Tabriz to the east. In this fine example, an overscale alabaster reserve takes a commanding presence, enclosing a multifaceted, stained glass-like centerpiece in brick red, deep indigo, and azure. This central shield medallion rests amidst a few spaciously drawn broad flowerheads and angular vinery while a striking serrated vine edges the perimeter. The subliminal "animation" of motifs experienced by the viewer is caused by sublime improvisations of line and shape, a tremendously successful artistic license. Throughout the entire surface, delicate ripples of abrash color shifts imbue this staggering piece with eye-pleasing textures.
