SULTANABAD, West Central Persian
8' 8" x 13' 0"
Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) This unquestionably singular Sultanabad rug features a wondrously lyrical all-over pattern of overscale abstracted flower heads amidst swirling vinery that forms a keyhole-shaped latticework. Closer inspection reveals more subtly drawn, underlining forest green vinery, creating a sense of dimensionality to the field. Daring "abrash" (intentional striation of color), shifts at the very top. In this 140-year-old wonderfully preserved Persian village rug, high-decoration marries with fine art to glorious effect.
