ZIEGLER SULTANABAD
12' 8" x 15' 8" (386 x 478cm) Circa 1875
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The finest 19th-century Ziegler Sultanabads, which fused Persian paradisical landscape gardens with Western trade demands and Arts and Crafts Movement patterns, are renowned as the most refined of all village carpets. In this imaginatively colored, oversized Ziegler, a vibrant ruby-red field is skillfully juxtaposed with a very seldom-seen cloudy jade main border, creating a charming effect. On a vibrant ruby-red ground, an opulent latticework of blossoms encloses bouquets of florets, forming the captivating field design and conveying a deeply harmonious, soothing ambiance. An exciting use of abrash, artistic tonal variations, is prominent throughout as a visual reminder of the daily cycle of time, beginning with morning light striations at the bottom and ending with evening light at the top, with the most saturated hues of ruby and jade. One especially dramatic color shift occurs in the main border at the top, where the prized jade green used throughout most of the border suddenly feathers into a brilliant vermillion, a demonstration of the alluring beauty to be discovered in the balance between perfect symmetry and enchanting asymmetry. The impressive heavy-pile condition, unique color palette, and European-level refinement make this 150-year-old Ziegler Sultanabad a foundational and meaningful choice for a broad range of interiors, from highly formal to Arts and Crafts.
