Afshar Niriz rugs are celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship, intricate designs, and rich natural dyes. They were woven by nomadic Afshari people living near the city of Kirman. The classical pattern language of this important city-weaving center was a rich source of inspiration for nomadic weavers, as we can see in this tribal rendition of a very formal design. Here, colorful pomegranate blossoms abound on a very angular, viney trellis, rendered with a boldly abstract flair and set against a desert-sand background. Hues of vermillion, Tuscan tan, mink, jade, midnight blue, and vibrant lapis blues complete the alluring palette. Tiny peony flowers pepper the design throughout in a strongly contrasting, deepest blue, magnifying the range of scales and adding dimensional depth to the fantastical botanical arrangement. Honoring the weavers' tribal heritage and in striking contrast to the flowery blossoms, very geometrically drawn Diamonds of Strength in cruciform arrangements are embedded in the floral composition, adding to the mystery of the woven story. The petiteness of the main border of abstract blossoms within hexagonal cartouches and flanking minor 'meander' borders magnifies the intricate field of flowers. To the delight of connoisseurs of unique tribal rugs, this century-old Niriz is preserved in luxurious, heavy-pile condition
