("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") This exceptional Bakshaish Camelhair excels in its graphically spacious artistry and a very rare display of six lions standing on their haunches. Traditionally the lion symbolized the Shah, perhaps indicating this weaving was a tribute to Naser al-Din, the ruler of the Qajar Dynasty at that time. The ascending field design can be considered a series of alternating horizontal rows. The first and third rows feature pairs of ochre lions facing a crest-like, detailed palmette. In contrast, in the center row, the alabaster lions face away from a diffuse floral arrangement with a phoenix-shaped blossom at the center. Employing an age-old device that imagines borders as framing rug designs that continue infinitely beyond the physicality of artwork, in this piece, an additional partial row at the very top of the field creates this "window" effect. The weaver of this eccentric rug played further with the viewer's perspective by creating a wide outer border of undyed camelhair, making a "rug within a rug" illusion. The superb pile condition, great age, generous use of undyed camelhair, and the seldom-seen lion motif merge to produce a highly original weaving even for the experimental Bakshaish people.
