(High-Collectible) A carpet of tremendous artistic magnitude, this masterful Bakshaish explores new territory for this folk art style with its entirely successful exploration of the ancient Persian garden design. We have only seen one other Bakshaish in this exceedingly rare format come through the gallery. So our excitement was palpable when this sophisticated carpet was unfurled for the first time. Though this paradisiacal garden patterning is typically only encountered in Court and village carpets, Bakshaish weavers have infused the classic axial arrangement with exuberant life through delightfully personal fish, uniquely stylized garlands, and running water. The captivating alternation of light and shade essential to this format's imagery is inventively amplified by the virtuoso application of a sensitive abrash technique that flatters the eye on a subliminal level, imparting its luminosity and warm presence throughout. Unfathomably, this unforgettable room-size treasure has been protected from the ravages of a century and a half and remains in heavier pile condition.
