This deeply abstracted, one-in-the-world design could not have been conceived anywhere but in the Bakshaish town of Northwest Persian Azerbaijan! Based on a niched decagon medallion motif associated with the larger province of Heriz, most often seen as the centerpiece of Serapi carpets, its use here as a repeating element verifies the extraordinarily creative mind of Bakshaish weavers. On display also is their signature spontaneity. Note how the medallion design was reinvented every time it iwas woven, the height and width stretching and contracting as the unique color combining changes row by horizontal row. Living with such an inventive work of art, where every knot seems placed for effect, is incredibly rewarding. The completely individual color palette is notable, presenting coral red against crimson; layers of walnut, chocolate, and teak-toned browns; with buttercup yellows and an iridescent Bakshaish blue border and accents to finalize the notion that this squarish room-size carpet is true to its aesthetic. Clearly used lovingly over 15 decades, the carpet's condition still comfortably allows placement in a busier family setting.
