(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The northeast Persian town of Dorasht has been an acclaimed weaving center since the Middle Ages. Revealing the aesthetic of the period, this nearly two-hundred-year-old piece exhibits the geometric proclivities of the weaver in her floral drawing of the striking, double-anchored central medallion and botanical elements. Exceedingly expertly handled, the "abrash" or intentional color variegation throughout this prized antique rug is quite stunning. At the same time, the mastery of creating its unique palette of hues raises this specimen to the heights of 19th century weaving. A dramatic color shift from pecan in the lower border to umber in the top half of the framing is riveting. The medallion's tonalities move from walnut at the top to pecan below. These unique neutral colors set the rug apart from usual Persian colorways, while the spandrels provide more traditional copper and sandstone reds. The various motifs in the field and border are spaciously presented, delicately drawn, and individually expressed, communicating a beautifully accomplished presentation.
