("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Antique Ferahan carpets are renowned for their intricate, densely woven patterns, and all have closely shorn pile and a fine, “handkerchief” handle. Here, a carnelian “shield” with vertical pendants encloses finely etched flora including four distinctive leaf green flowerheads and ivory blossoms connected by delicate vinery, as well as two pairs of small birds perched upon indigo blooms. This medallion rests upon an elongated, parchment reserve, sparsely adorned with eight stylized blossoms while numerous smaller flowers emanate inward from the striking stepped edge. In contrast to the open centerpiece, the midnight indigo corners are filled with a densely drawn latticework replete with an array of delightfully colorful mosaic blossoms in tones of jade, crimson, chamomile, and teal. Minuscule animals can be seen resting amidst the floral profusion, a residual design element harkening back to the weaver’s tribal lifestyle.
