(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The major city of Tabriz has been the center of classically designed antique carpets in Northwest Persia since the 16th century Safavid Dynasty. During the 19th century, the city boasted some of the most famous masters, most notably the luminary Hadji Jallili, a practicing Sufi. There is no precedent for this astonishing "Garden of Paradise" design which introduces two slender, swaying trees that provide the structure to support the carpet's profusion of exquisite flowers. An elaborate vase at the bottom of the rug sends up a single shoot that produces a series of seven differing flowerheads, the number in Sufism that is a metaphor for infinity or completion. Three layers above the archway are packed with heavily laden fronds. The overall effect is heavenly, aided by a brilliant color palette of soft golds and complementary tones, capturing the ecstasy of a dervish twirling. Touches of carmine red in the field and appearing and disappearing around the border add balance and weight to this ethereal masterpiece.
