Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("The California Collection") This superb 19th-century piece from the renowned classical carpet designer Hadji Jallili demonstrates a masterful sense of compositional balance incorporating courtly and Northwest Persian village sensibilities. A legion of swaying boteh forms, or ’Seeds of Life’, are arrayed in rhythmic rows on a field of glowing sand. Burgeoning from within are bouquets of tiny blossoms waiting to emerge in their season to fulfill the cyclical mandate of life once more. While idealistic in its presentation, every design element is rife with spontaneous variance in color, size, and shape, imbuing this piece with a gentle animation. Tonal gradations of burnt copper, blued steel, buff, electrum, persimmon, and midnight cobalt ring out in tuneful unison. Artfully employed, these naturally dyed colors and how they change from top to bottom and left to right illustrate the subtle genius of rugs woven under the auspices of Hadji Jallili’s influence. Its extremely good, heavier pile condition would make it a sublime decorative element or a prize addition to an art rug collection.
