Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Textured desert earth colors are integral to achieving the sublime sophistication we have all come to expect from rugs in the style of the renowned 19th-century Tabriz workshop of Hadji Jallili. Nearly perfectly camouflaged, a teardrop medallion is revealed by a dark outline that stands against a gently kaleidoscopic allover field pattern. Adept attention to detail shows itself through the painstaking knotwork that shapes every frond, flower, leaf, and palmette as they come to life before the eyes of the viewer. Exuding immense balance, desert earth tonal gradations of burnt copper, buff, electrum, peach, mahogany, and midnight cerulean ring out in harmony with the subtle celadon tinge coating the background. The primary border is an intriguing combination of design elements from the ’Shah Abbas’ and ‘Herati’ formats interconnected by sweeping arabesque vinery. Both abrupt and graduated color changes make it particularly dynamic. Superb heavier pile condition attests to the extreme durability of antique rugs as art for the floor.
