Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The eastern Persian region of Khorassan (a toponym meaning "where the sun arrives from") has been lauded for the production of extremely fine rugs since Timurid times in the late Middle Ages. Ovoid cartouches bearing bouquets and rosy cypress trees hover around a scalloped diamond medallion with a lotus blooming at its center. In the surrounding ivory reserve, extremely fine knot-work allows for a captivating assemblage of highly expressive blossoms on wire-thin vinery unfolds in a jubilant display of botanical diversity in sparkling jewel tones. Tiny trees spring forth from niches along the inner border in sublime shades of rarely seen leaf green to emerald. The gentle shifting of every hue throughout the composition is intentional, lending visual texture and enhancing this superbly formal rug's timeless appeal. After 125 years of age it remains in mostly heavier pile condition.
